Filler with plenty of plants and a relaxing, soft white interior, it's perfect for travelers looking for a bit of calm. Visitors often head to Tannersville in the depths of winter, to ski at Hunter Mountain or Windham Mountain, but we're fans of the fall, when you can see the changing colors at the nearby Mountain Top Arboretum or by making the 1.4-mile roundtrip hike to Kaaterskill Falls, about a five minute drive from the house. Or, you could simply enjoy fall from the home's spacious patio and backyard.

Vermont has such an exquisite expression of fall, we’d be remiss not to give you two options in the state. So behold, a contemporary one-bedroom cottage, creatively and tastefully decorated, at a farm right on Lake Champlain. It has an open layout, blackout shades for deep sleep, and fully equipped kitchen. Guests can sign up for yoga in the neighboring barn or pitch in with feeding the llamas, sheep, and goats. And don’t miss walks on the lake's docks or sunsets spent gazing across the water.

Originally built in the 1800s—and moved to its current location about 15 minutes from the town of Appomattox, Virginia, and four hours south of Washington, D.C., in the ‘70s—the cabin offers expected creature comforts like Wi-Fi, a well-equipped kitchen, and modern bathrooms. There’s also an outdoor patio with views of the trees, and access to 900 feet of private riverfront along the chilly Appomattox River (complete with its own waterside fire pit).

Top amenities: Breakfast for two included each morning, fresh eggs and cider made on the farmThe innkeepers at Applegarden Farm's B&B bring a basket of fresh, homemade breakfast straight to the front door of your private one-bedroom cottage in the morning, with eggs sourced from their very own hens. (Note, the cottage is host to a well-equipped kitchen you can cook in, too.) The farm is known for its, you guessed it, apples, which grow in orchards on-site and are made into hard cider. You’ll also find Scottish Highland cows roaming around the grounds. Scope them out from the Adirondack chairs in front of the cottage or the high-up deck. It doesn’t get much more restorative (or romantic) than this.

Otis, Massachusetts

Top amenities: Furnished outdoor deck with grill and fire pit, movie projector, on seven acresWhile some of us are content with the annual pumpkin spice latte to ring in the season, others need a trip to a full-blown glass treehouse chalet in the Berkshires. For the latter crowd, book here and curl up before the floating wood-burning fireplace to really kick off a cozy fall. The multiple floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on the surrounding woods and fern-covered hillside let you feel like you're in the colorful trees, too. This home has one bedroom, but there's a day bed in the living area that lets you squeeze up to four people. (We'd recommend this spot for a couple, though, since there's not much privacy in sleeping in the nearly wall-less living room.)
